Life

Sometimes we get so caught up in what we think life is that we chase after things that are upon hindsight ephemeral and inconsequential.

We forget to be thankful for all that we have. We think that if only we attain more material things, like Wii Fit or a pair of nice shoes, we will be happier.

We live in a consumerist society. We buy temporary happiness. And perhaps decades of advertising has somewhat addled our perception of what brings us happiness.

I refer to real happiness. Not that airy fairy Oh-I-Got-Something-New euphoria.

Real happiness is not the latest thingamajig wrapped up in trendy packaging. Years from now, all that stuff is just going to be exactly that. Stuff. Gathering dust in some obscure part of the house.

Real happiness is Family. Friends. Health. Security.

And most of us have that. But we forget to be grateful for them because they always seem to be there. We take them all for granted when we should be living each day just being truly glad that they are in our lives.

My godmother was diagnosed with cancer a few days ago. We are in shock. I hope she beats it. I hope she gives it such a good thrashing that it never comes back.
